Why is this important

While the feminist movement has all good intentions, many myths and sayings around the movement have created a negative connotation. It is important to take a look at these and see why they are wrong or how your idea of feminism can be altered.

Common Myths

Feminist Hate Men

This is one of the most common myths. Feminists promote equality and respect across all genders, including men. Additionally, many men throughout history have greatly contributed to the movement!

Feminist Hate Traditional Gender Roles

While some feminists may want to go against traditional roles, the movement is not against them as a whole. Instead, feminism is about women having the choice to choose their lifestyle, and if they do or don't want to take on those traditional roles.

Feminism is No Longer Relevant

While women may legally have the same rights as men, there are still many forms of inequality that need to be addressed among gender and other intersectional topics.

Feminism Ignores Other Social Problems

While in the past, the feminist movement has been centered on the issues of primarily white, middle-class women, this is changing. The movement is evolving to now discuss the issues faced by all women, and looks into how different factors affect a women's lived experiences.

False Accusations of Sexual Assault are Common

False accusations have been a relevant topic in the media today. Many times, when someone in the media is accused of rape, people argue that a false accusation can ruin someones life. While this is true, only  2-10% of accusations are false, so the chances that the victim is lying are very low.

Feminists Exclude Trans People

While the old feminist movement may not have accounted for those who were not born as women, a lot has changed. Trans feminism is a growing area of study and discussion.

Feminism is Anti-Family

Feminism is about the freedom to have whatever family dynamic you want. Sometimes this can get confused with going against the traditional family dynamic. Feminists are just saying that it is not the only option for women, but it is still an acceptable option if a woman chooses.

Feminism Ignores Men's Issues

Feminism looks at our society as a whole and addresses issues within it. Many of these issues also harm men by creating unrealistic standards or stereotypes for them, and this is something that feminism has been addressing and will continue to look at.
